Introduction

School of Education for the Aged of Shanghai Open University was established on April 18th, 2001, which is a great move for Shanghai Open University to carry out the national education reform and development of long-term planning programs, to strengthen the education for the aged and to meet the needs of the development of the society. This also provides more education resources, create better learning environments and let the old have someone to depend on, and to let the old have something to be happy with. School of Education for the Aged is divided into three parts: academic education, distance education and community education.

Academic Education

School of education for the aged of Shanghai Open University cooperates with Shanghai University for the Aged. Approved by Shanghai Municipal Education Committee, the first batch of programs includes piano performance, vocal music performance, sports health care and photography technology. According to teaching plan, all the elder learners are required to accomplish a 2-year program, and get the associate degree when they pass all the exams. This enables all the elder learners to realize their pursuit and their own values by making their university of dreams come true. At the same time, the elderly can continuously update their knowledge, enrich their spiritual life, and cultivate their tastes. There are 19 learners are admitted for sports health care, 24 learners are admitted for photography technology, 10 learners are admitted for piano performance and 20 learners are admitted for vocal music performance for the first batch of elder learners at school of education for the aged of Shanghai Open University. Many elder people expressed that it is very meaningful for Shanghai Open University to set up the education for the aged, and it is also meet the needs of the aged. The elder people can learn more systematically, enrich their spiritual life, embody their won pursuit and their own values, and realize their dreams of university.

Distance Education

School of education for the aged of Shanghai Open University develops distance education for the aged based on the advantages of TV and Internet. The teaching contents of Air Class for the Aged of Shanghai Distance University for the Aged, and a lot of courseware on Shanghai learning Network for the aged will become important teaching materials for School of Education for the Aged of Shanghai Open University. At present, there are 4213 rating points of the Distance University for the Aged all over the city, and almost 300,000 elder learners. Such programs as “Legal protection for the rights of elder people” and “nutrition and dietary therapy for the elder people” of Shanghai Education TV Station are very popular among the elder people. There are 14,200 online video courses on “Video Class”, the length of which is 50,000 minutes. There are nearly 20 experts and professors online to answer the questions and solve the problems all the year round on “Expert Consultation”. Shanghai Open University will continuously take the advantages of the rating points; promote the education for the aged by face-to-face teaching combined with TV; provides more education resources for the aged; enlarge the coverage of education for the aged; improve the learning environments for the aged; and make the education for the aged more efficient, more convenient and more modernized.

Community Education

School for the Aged of Shanghai Open University relies on the community education of 18 community schools, which are awarded the brozen medal of “Learning Center for the Aged”. Shanghai Open University will fully untilize the present system of community schools, strengthen the support to elder people’s education of community school system, and set up courses, lectures and activities for the aged,in order to provide more aboundant learning products and nournishment for the mind, based on the promotion of education for the aged in different districts and courties.
