In 1960, Professor Su Buqing, the famous mathematician and vice president of the university at that time had the first lesson, which was recorded in the University’s history. Ever since, it has become a glorious tradition of the University to advocate profound learning and noble morality, respect for teachers and teaching, and teachers’ ethics of imparting knowledge and educating people.

Currently, Shanghai Open University has introduced or developed a host of academic leaders and elite teachers in the field of open and distance education. At present, there are more than 1200 full-time faculty members in the whole system, including 191 at headquarters with 17 as professors and 65 associate professors. Over 1400 adjunct professors are employed by the University, among whom are professors from celebrated universities, such as Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University and East China Normal University. Sir John Daniel and Professor Abdul Khan, former Assistant Director General of UNESCO, and Professor Shan Chunchang, consultant of the State Council of China, as well as scholars and specialists from universities and trades concerned have been appointed as Advisory Professor, Chair Professor or Invited Professor of the University or relevant colleges.
