    1960

    Founding Of Shanghai TV University (SHTVU) and offering of undergraduate education for adults.

    1966

    Suspension Of Shanghai TV University (SHTVU)

    1978

    Resumption of SHTVU and offering of junior college education for adults.

    1996

    Offering Of undergraduate education for junior college graduates with the support of CRTVU Programs.

    1997

    Setting-up of the UNESCO Chair on UNITWIN Network in Distance and Open Learning.

    1998

    Independent offering of junior college distance education program for registered students.

    2003

    Student enrollment amounting to 100,000, and the university being a mega-university in the world.

    2005

    Achieving “Excellent” in the summative assessment of the, “CRTVU Project of Talent Training Mode Reform and Open Education Experimentation” organized by the Ministry Of Education of China.

    2008

    Taking the initiative to apply for and passing the Education Quality Audit of the International Council of Distance Education (ICDE).

    2010

    Establishing Shanghai Open University based on Shanghai TV University with the approval of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.Constructing Shanghai Open University on the list of “Outline of Shanghai Municipal Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020)” issued by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.“Exploring a Model Of Open University Construction” as a key project of the national education system reform.

    2011

    “The Ordinance for the Promotion of Life-long Education in Shanghai” stating that open universities established in Shanghai should gradually integrate adult higher education resources to form open learning platforms.Participating the ’20+20 Cooperation Plan for Chinese and African Institutions of Higher Education’, a plan cooperated by UNESCO and the Ministry Of education; carrying out strategic cooperation with the African Council Of Distance Education (ACDE).

    2012

    Renaming Shanghai TV University as Shanghai Open University with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China

    2014

    Added as a bachelor’s degree granting unit by Shanghai Academic Degrees Committee
